App permissions
Last updated: November 1, 2026
GED Free for Android (gedpre.com) asks for very little. None of its permissions gives access to your location, contacts, camera, microphone, photos or files. Some are added automatically by the Google libraries the app uses; they are listed here too.
android.permission.INTERNET
Network
To download lessons, images, slides and videos, show ads (AdMob), check purchases and send usage statistics and crash reports (see your choices).
android.permission.ACCESS_NETWORK_STATE
Network
Checks whether you are online before downloading, so the app can tell you instead of failing.
com.android.vending.BILLING
In-app purchase (added by Google Play Billing)
Lets you buy and restore Premium through Google Play.
com.google.android.gms.permission.AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_AD_ID, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_ATTRIBUTION, ACCESS_ADSERVICES_TOPICS
Advertising (added by Google Mobile Ads)
Access to the advertising ID and the Android Privacy Sandbox to show and measure ads. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland personalized ads need your consent; elsewhere you can opt out under "Your Privacy Choices" in the app's settings. You can reset or delete the advertising ID in Android settings. With Premium, no ads are shown.
android.permission.WAKE_LOCK
System (added by Google libraries)
Keeps the device awake for a moment so that statistics and ads can finish a short background task.
com.google.android.finsky.permission.BIND_GET_INSTALL_REFERRER_SERVICE
Install source (added by Google libraries)
Reads from Google Play which link the app was installed from (for example from gedfree.com), for install statistics. In the EEA, the UK and Switzerland used only with your consent; elsewhere you can turn statistics off under "Your Privacy Choices".
Libraries from other companies
- Google Mobile Ads SDK (AdMob) and User Messaging Platform: ads and the consent form.
- Firebase Core, Analytics and Crashlytics: usage statistics and crash reports (consent needed in the EEA, the UK and Switzerland; elsewhere you can turn them off).
- Google Play Billing: the Premium purchase.
- Android WebView: some lesson pages.
How these use data is explained in the privacy policy. This list is updated when a new app version changes its permissions.
